Current state of Network Management

Current Network Management solutions with Service Provider cover Fault Management and Trouble Ticketing.
Performance management is only partially implemented. Service Providers hardly use NMS / OSS for Configuration Management. They still depend on Element Management Systems for Configuration.

There is less importance given to the service management.  Providers generally use in-house developed   tools for service management. Most NMS/OSS solution providers put there effort/money in improving correlation techniques, which operators found difficult to use.

With my experience, operators always depend on NMS/OSS solution providers to configure correlation rules, Some times they just use what ever configurations done during installation or some times totally disable  them.

Operators want to manage services rather than the network resources that are used to deliver services

What Operators want.

Service Topology  instead of Network Topology
Service Impact Analysis  instead of knowing just Network Failures
Service Discovery  over Multi-Vendor Elements instead of  Network Discovery
Automated Service Provisioning (including Network Element Configuration)  instead of just Element Configuration
Proactive Management  instead of Reactive Management

Service management helps  Operators to improve customer satisfaction by quicker response to new requirements and customer complaints.
